The Extravagance of Loss

By Luke Davies

so down the wide expanses of America we sailed

we sailed the wide highways

sailing the wide highways one day you shoved

that is the operative word you unbuckled

firstly your jeans and shoved

your hand down your pants but this was quickly

restrictive. slid them to your thighs

underwear to follow. soon they had to go over

the cascade of your knees

so you could find more playing room

on the wide fields of America

so rushing by so Keep

-our-highways-cleanly

it was a blue winter day but in California

it was always summer. alas for me

I was occupied with driving skills that day

a minor kind of tragedy or restriction

tragedy not being the operative word

while thousands are still starving

but a blockage nonetheless. what happened to that flow?

you cocked your head and tensed just like a hunter

listening for the twig-crack of America

you were connected to your freedom

completely present completely gone already. Time

came sailing with us down the highways of America.
