Submit to Slake: Los Angeles

Reading Slake will provide you with a better sense of what we’re looking for than will reading this missive. We intentionally make Slake hard to describe, but what should be apparent upon first reading is the quality we insist upon. But since you’ve gotten this far, we’ll give you a few points to consider:

  • Slake publishes journalism, fiction, memoir, essays, criticism, poetry, photography, art.
  • As the title makes clear, we’re interested in material about Los Angeles or told from a Southern California viewpoint or with a connection to the way we live here in Los Angeles. This is a broader purview than it may seem. Los Angeles is a city with national and international implications and we expect everything in Slake to be of interest to readers no matter where they live.
  • We founded Slake to be a counterpoint to quick, news-of-the-second, listy, here today, gone tomorrow writing. We believe words and images are for more than just information. They are also for experience, context and reflection.
  • Slake doesn’t have a house writing style. We will consider alternative forms of storytelling and nontraditional voices. We just want good storytelling.
  • We love pieces that make us look at Los Angeles in a new light.
